A useful book that really lives up to its own title.

I remember when I was growing up (not Lutheran) in church, "learning" about other denominations/religions meant learning why THEY were wrong, and WE were right- why THEY were going to "Hell" and WE were going to Heaven. THAT IS NOT WHAT THIS BOOK IS ABOUT (thank God) !! Each denomination and religion is treated with utmost respect. Beliefs are stated without being ridiculed. Yes, there is a comparison between each religion and (ELCA) Lutheran beliefs, but even here, neither side is pre-supposed to be "right" or "wrong." This book is designed to be informational- to provide the reader with an understanding of his neighbor's faith. It's concise, easy-to-read, well-organised, and answers almost every question I've had about certain denominations. Whether one is Lutheran or not, this book is a valuable resource. -the writer of this review is a lay Episcopalian who is interested in theology, but has no formal academic study on the subject. This book is not just for clergy!
Good intro into who believes what

This book provides a nice and, I believe, well balanced overview of most of the significant Christian denominations and other major non-Christian religions such as Buddhism, Hinduism, Islam and Judaism. It offers a well-organized, clear and concise snapshot of each religion's beliefs, teachings, religious practice and worship. The book is edited from an Evangelical Lutheran perspective, so each religion is compared to Lutheran faith and practice. If you are a Lutheran, you can use these sections to compare other religions to your own beliefs. if you're not Lutheran, you can use the book for the wealth of other information contained in it. This reviewer is a Lutheran clergyman practicing hospital chaplaincy in a large multicultural medical center. It provides information that I use on a regular basis as I encounter patients, family members and hospital staff people of various cultures and religions. A good resource!
