Although no year can be designated as that which saw the "founding" of Honesdale, 1827 did produce considerable activity directed at bringing a village into being at the confluence of the Lackawaxen and Dyberry Rivers. The present volume outlines the preceding land acquisitions, describes the site before it was cleared, and tells of the rapid growth of the village originally known as Dyberry Forks. Early industries, craftsmen, commercial and financial enterprises are described as are religious and civic events in the history of Honesdale before the early 1850's. This book contains 17 pages of illustrations of early buildings and county historians. It is a carefully written and documented study of what could be called "the dark ages" of the history of an interesting and historic community.
