In the north-east of England, many children are found to be infected with an abnormal gene only found in the primitive Archaea. They are saved by clever scientists.

But soon after this hoped-for victory, multitudes of all ages across the world rapidly regress to a pre-hominid state. They are infected by whole Archaean organisms. Those that are infected rapidly disintegrate. A new struggle has to be won, and fast.
