More often than not, it's about people encountering overwhelming circumstances, without a support network to sustain them during temporary crisis. The temporary situation becomes lasting, if not permanent. The book's title points to the entrapment of being homeless. Each character was bound to become homeless, and once homeless, they became bound by it.
