Ms. Mullen's new collection, Homecoming, begins with poems written from the point of view of the child and youth growing up in a family where silence, control and harsh realities were the norm. It deals with loss, curiosity, and a deep sense of the need for change. Over time, new people, experiences and sincere relationships expand her understanding of what home should mean and be. She is also drawn to the world of nature where the woods and the wild offer her new realities of home, of the vast complexities and wonder that life holds for her to explore. The final part of her book broadens the awareness of home through travel to other countries and offers the opportunity to discover new homes and people, the awareness of differences that create bonds of acceptance and belonging. She considers being at home with herself everywhere and in the company of people with whom she shares genuine friendship ''worth every word I have written." Her work encourages the honesty that sets one free. Finally, she hopes to support others in telling their own stories, perhaps in finding their own authentic voices
