Romance & Racecars

"Home to the High Fells" is the first book by Elizabeth Gill that I've read. Set in the bleak flatland between northern England and Scotland called the fells & London, the story is a love triangle between Jack Neville, Rosalind West & Freddie Harlington. Jack Neville is an automobile designer who has come from the northern city of Durham to London to work for a wealthy industrialist known as Sir Trevor. Jack plans to build a small utilitarian fuel-efficient car that can be afforded by most people. His design consumes most of his waking hours. Rosalind West also decides to leave Durham and come to London. She winds up as Jack's secretary. She & Jack knew each other as kids, sharing a kiss many years ago. Together, they work well and progress on the project. Wealthy baron-to-be Freddie Harlington loves to race cars and makes sure that he makes Jack's acquaintance when rumors about the new design surface. Jack has secretly fallen in love with his assistant Rosalind, but watches as the dashing Freddie sweeps her off her feet. Rosalind doesn't fit into Freddie's snobby upper crust society; and Freddie's commitment to his father and their estate requires that he marry wealth. Freddie & Rosalind's torrid affair is broken up when Freddie is engaged to Jennifer, the wealthy daughter of an American industrialist. Brokenhearted, Rosalind allows Jack to step in and comfort her. Jack & Rosalind marry. Meanwhile, Freddie finds his fat American wife increasingly distasteful and scurries back to Rosalind after a break with his wife. Rosalind leaves Jack who she does not love for Freddie. This sends Jack into a drunken tailspin, which eventually results in his firing at the automotive company. Meanwhile, Freddie crashes his racecar & is killed. Rosalind, now Mrs. Neville, carries Freddie child. When the plot is described, it does sound a bit like a movie of the week soap opera, but it reads well. We get into the heads of each of the characters, their parents and social strata, and enjoy the plot that works out to leave you with a smile on your face. "Home to the High Fells" is a book about relationships. It examines economic pressures, people trying to find out what their life dream is, and the ties we have to our family. It's a good fast reading experience, worth the adventure. Enjoy!
