"Home Comings and Disappearances" is set in Perth Western Australia. It is a novel in five parts, each set a decade apart, in 1968, 1978, 1988, 1998 and 2008. Five very different episodes feature the fate and fortunes of five different protagonists. Each episode is nevertheless linked by minor characters. In some cases minor characters in one episode emerge to become major characters in the next. But throughout, the common themes of home coming and disappearance unite the whole. And through the progression of the stories, the progression of the decades in suburban Perth Western Australia is observed, both in the minutiae and in the larger social and political context. But deeper, beneath these settings, beneath these details and the dramas that play out in the lives of the characters, runs a common thread. This thread is a searching for elusive identity, of seeking the transcendent, of a search for something permanent, of somewhere to make a home. And this search, this aching for home, is paradoxically the very root of the disappearances that darkly stalk this brace of tales. Where, finally, is home?
