This character-driven novel is a page-turner that deserves to become a classic. It's an honest portrayal of a black family in rural 1940s Mississippi, written in the vein of "Tortilla Curtain". Incredibly sad yet hopeful, it's simply the way it was. I swear I could even smell the rose bay scent.
