The objective of this study is to assess pregnant women's knowledge of home births. A home birth is one that takes place outside a maternity facility and without the assistance of qualified personnel. However, it is recommended that all pregnant women give birth in a maternity facility. This is important because childbirth is a time that carries many risks for both the mother and her child. Statistics from around the world bear this out. In the Kalonge rural health zone, home births attended by traditional birth attendants are a reality. Based on this observation, we conclude that this situation is likely due to: a lack of information among pregnant women about giving birth in a maternity ward; geographic and economic barriers to accessing maternity services; and the influence of traditional birth attendants within the community. Given the existence of certain sociocultural factors consistent with those mentioned above, we pursue the following objectives: to identify the factors contributing to inaccessibility to maternity care and to determine the influences of traditional childbirth practices.
