Holy Lockdown: Does the Church Limit Black Progress? Why are there many churches, yet major problems in Black communities? Why are Blacks amongst the most Jesus-Praising people in the world, yet the... This description may be from another edition of this product.
A must read for all African Americans. This book served as a validation mechanism for me! I have been saying the same thing for years- Thank God Almighty. Thank you Mr Camara for having the courage to "expose" such a taboo subject. I whole heartedly agree with your message. This book has not only helped me to view the church in a more objective manner, but I have applied it to my everyday dealings. I encourage others to do the same- don't just take everything at face value- ASK QUESTIONS. (Thanks to my brother T Smith for sharing this book with myself and the young men in our community.) Nothing But The Truth

Jeremiah Camara is absolutely on point with his evaluation of the impact of the Black church on the collective psyche of the Black community. Like it or not, it is way past time for us to step outside of our emotional attachment to the church, and take a good hard look at what we are learning from our pulpits and whether or not the sermons we are hearing are practical and useful in our everyday lives. In as much as we may enjoy the emotionalism and edutainment of the Black church, we must do a better job of looking dispassionately, logically and critically at our financial, professional, familial, and educational lives and begin to make rational decisions grounded in fact that line up with what we say we want. This book is a definite must read for anyone willing to take the next step and move into a higher realm of thinking and being.
It hurts! But it is the TRUTH!!!!!!!

What brother writes about in his book may hurt many faithful and sincere churchgoers. However, it is the truth! Brother in his intro states his motives for writing this work. His motive was not to tear the church down but to simply look at it and the impact of its teaching on the Black Community. We have to ask, why is the Black Community OVERRUNNING with churches, I have personnally seen FOUR churches on one city block. Yet, our community still suffers. I am on the last chapter of the book and I find it very interesting and is a book that every person who attends a church needs to read. The chapter where he talks about how pastors need to grow beyond the literal interpretation of the bible. For example, he talks about how pastors in 2005 still preach about how a man was swallowed whole by a whale and then spit up on dry land whole. He says that it is a scientific FACT that whales cannpt swallow anything as large as a grapefruit. Every chapter is on point. I wish I could talk to brother and let him know to keep on going and expect a backlash, because there are very FEW Christains who are willing to have a logical, rational and nonemotional discussion about what we have been taught about the Bible and our Saviour Jesus the Christ. Another example in the book is when he askes the question,"How can you read a King James Version of the Bible and make it your sole authority on matters relating to God and you HAVE NEVER EVEN DID ANY RESEARCH ON WHO KING JAMES WAS AND STOOD FOR? THE SAME IS TRUE FOR CONSTANTINE! The book Holy Lock Down is own point! Black pastors have our people's attention on Sunday's and very FEW speak on issues that will help us get out of this condition. I CAN GO ON AND ON AND ON! READ THE BOOK FOR YOURSELF! JESUS SAID THE TRUTH WILL SET YOU FREE! Question: Aren't you tired of being a mental slave?

Jeremiah Camara has done what should have been done a long time ago. What an excellent book! I actually read it twice. I have been attending church all my life but the truth is the truth. I recommend this book for everyone especially black preachers. The book is so well written. Now, when I attend church I see exactly what Mr. Camara is talking about. This is one of, if not the most important book a black person can read. This is an abosolute classic. Jeremiah Camara is a courages man. It's time to realize that we need to become more intellectual as a people. Please read this book. And above all---keep an open mind.
The Black Church needs an over haul!

The reason I gave this book five stars is because of the bravery it took Mr.Camara to say what he said and come out with this publication. Why does the Black church not speak on economic freedom and Self-Help? Who was King James, Agustine, and what happened at the Council of Nicea. Why do pastors give the same recycled messages of old. There are games being played? It seems the more churches we have, our conditions worsen as a whole. I saw god this morning - I looked in the mirror. Its time we ask questions!
