Hollywood's Railroads Volume One: Virginia & Truckee

The first book in a series about railroads and locomotives used by Hollywood in motion pictures and television shows. This volume covers the four locomotives from Nevada's Virginia & Truckee Railroad that were purchased by Hollywood studios between 1937 and 1947. Collectively, the were used in more than 150 motion pictures and television shows between 1937 and the present. Three of those locomotives are now at the Nevada State Railroad Museum in Carson City. The fourth is a prized possession of Old Tucson Studios in Arizona. While it no longer operates, it is still used as a background in motion pictures. The book is 8.5 by 11 inches, 72 pages, softcover, and printed on enameled stock. It includes 117 photographs - 15 in color - showing various trains and film companies in action. Some of the films included in this book are "Wells Fargo" 1937, "Union Pacific" (1939), "Young Tom Edison" (1940), "Go West" (1940), "The Harvey Girls" (1946), "The Virginian" (1946), "Duel in the Sun" (1946), "Red River" (1948), "Whispering Smith" (1948), "Annie Get Your Gun" (1950), "Rails into Laramie" (1954), "The Great Locomotive Chase" (1956), "The Last Train from Gun Hill" (1959), "The Horse Soldiers" (1959), "The Man Who Shot Liberty Valance" (1962), "How the West Was Won" (1962), "McLintock!" (1963), "The Wild Wild West" (1965), "Joe Kidd" (1972), "The Life and Times of Judge Roy Bean" (1972), "Tombstone" (1993), and many more. The stars that worked with these trains include James Arness, Johnny Cash, Montgomery Clift, Gary Cooper, Robert Conrad, Kirk Douglas, Clint Eastwood, Henry Fonda, Glenn Ford, Clark Gable, Judy Garland, James Garner, Katharine Hepburn, Charlton Heston, William Holden, Alan Ladd, Burt Lancaster, Jack Lemmon, the Marx Brothers, Joel McCrea, Shirley MacLaine, Paul Newman, Maureen O'Hara, Gregory Peck, Elvis Presley, Robert Preston, Burt Reynolds, Debbie Reynolds, Roy Rogers, Mickey Rooney, Kurt Russell, Randolph Scott, Barbara Stanwyck, James Stewart, Elizabeth Taylor, Spencer Tracy, and John Wayne. Many are pictured at work around the trains.
