A Country Wiping Its Mouth

By Shnayjaah Valentine Jeanty

Shnayjaah Valentine Jeanty spent her childhood hating her father. Then ICE deported him, and the man she couldn't stand became the one she couldn't stop writing about. A Country Wiping Its Mouth is an unvarnished, high-octane poetry collection that asks why we fight for those who fail us. Written by 2024 National Youth Poet Laureate of the South Shnayjaah Valentine Jeanty, this book refuses broad tropes and sanitized narratives--weaving Haitian-Jamaican patois, text messages, DMs, and lyric prose into a fierce account of family, domestic violence, and survival in modern America.
