Intriguing

In describing the likely existence of "low yield" German atomic bombs (V4), the role of Heisenberg, Kammler and others, as well as "fuel air" and possible "neutron bombs" this book never seems to stray from the plausible and is well-footnoted with references that students of WWII will frequently recognize. Is it true? I am looking into the supporting evidence before deciding but it does seem so. The Germans seem to have had plenty of Uranium (they confiscated thousands of tons from the Belgians), had another Czech mine source, and knew how to run a breeder to create Plutonium for an alternative weapon. The Germans also had "every type of explosive trigger" known to the Americans, which is apparently the KEY to making a bomb with a reasonably small amount of material.[Recall: The uproar when Iraq was obtaining Kryton switches; it is this type of light based detonator circuit that allows for efficient IMPLOSION-based devices.]One issue that many will likely attack without reading carefully is the proposed German test explosion(s). Most critics would expect the radioactive fallout and debris to leave an easily detectable footprint in Germany. The profered explanation is that the test devices were NOT designed as weapons and so did not have the usual cladding/tamping material that weapons have; this is claimed as the source for most of the radioactive debris in a weapon. These experimental devices supposedly were clad so as to avoid this issue during testing. There is also an overview of V1 (earliest cruise missiles), V2 ballistic missiles, V3 pulse guns (which were fired on Luxembourg near the end of the war), and also a bit on the A9-A10 rockets and the "flying wing bomber", either of which could reach New York with these weapons as payloads.Since V1's and V2's are covered in depth elsewhere the leve of coverage seems entirely correct. V3's are seldom mentioned and their coverage is a good addition even though it is a minor area of the book.Good book; it could read a bit clearer and it does have a small bit of repetition -- a great editor might have made it truly Excellent.
