"It is not their thoughts but their overt deeds that we charge as criminal..."

When I first came across this book,I almost passed it up as an insignificient "coffee table" book. On a short glance through,I decided it was well worth reading and owning. This book is a good companion to "Hitler-The Missing Years" by Ernst Hanfstaengl, which I just read and wrote a review on September 25,2006.Unfortunately, that book had no photographs except one of the author and Hitler on the front cover and one of the author and his son on the back cover. Here is where this book comes in. It gives excellent insights into that inner group which made up the inner circle of power of the Nazi Party. It covers Goebbels,Goring,Hess,Borman,Himmler,Speer, von Schirach, von Ribbentrop,Rosenberg and Eva Braun. While the book concentrates on these 10 people,it also deals briefly with many of the other people associated with them and family members. The book is quite large 10" by 14",with 192 pages. There are 54 color and 250 B & W photographs. There are many full page and all excellently composed and printed on fine quality paper and bound into a high quality volume. No matter how many photos you've seen of these people, you'll be impressed the the photographs in this book. Nor is this simply a "picture-book";there is also excellent text on each character, that gives you a good idea of what they were like, what they believed in,and why they achieved the power and position they had in the party. Photos show what they looked like in their early days, even as children, how they looked when first joining the Party, and with most of them ,what they looked during their trials in Nuremberg and even after their imprisonment and after executions. There are numerous quotes by these people themselves as well as Hitler him. As an example,on page 135,he says to Albert Speer; "Then, when I was called upon to take up the leadership of my country, I wanted to transform it,together with you,Speer, erecting one edifice after another. It was going to be the most beautiful country in the world. Just think what we would have made of Berlin.Paris would have been nothing compared to it. But they spoiled everything for me. They interpreted my overtures as weakness. They thought that I was afraid. Me,of all people! What does that scum know about Fuhrer of National Socialist Germany? We'll get them! And then we'll settle scores! They will come to know me yet! This time nobody escapes! I have always been too soft! But no more! This time we settle up!" The book has a fine index along with of about 150 book Bibliography. One person I kept looking for was the author of the other book I reviewed ,Ernst Hanfstaengl. I believe he is shown in the photograph with Hitler,Goring and someone else on page 38. Ernst is standing on Hitler's right;though not named. He is also shown as the author of two books in the Bibliography. Overall,a very good book and resource.
