Good Crime Adventure With a Great Elderly Lead Character

Gerald Hammond is not new to the elderly lead character fiction novel as those who have read his superb novel On the Warpath are already no doubt aware. With that novel Hammond had a strong feisty grandma as the lead character. With Hit and Run he has changed the lead character's gender to male and added another generation. Luke Grant is a great great grandfather (known as GG by his great great granddaughters) but he's just as sharp as any newer generation character he comes across. Being 81 years of age Luke has lead quite and exciting life including being injured while training for the World War II D Day landing and becoming a sensational photographer. In his time he has been quite the lady's man, bedding more than his fare share in the years after his wife passed away. The wife of his grandson however despises him and has made life as difficult as she can to limit his access to his great granddaughters. So Luke more than surprised when he is summoned to the local hospital where his granddaughterinlaw knowing she is probably about to die with her last remaining energy makes him promise to take look after and raise them. This is going to be a huge hindrance on his lifestyle but they are blood relatives and he does love them after all. He is also determined to find out who ran down their mother and left her to die since the police don't seem to want to allocate any man power to it. Only thing is its a small Scottish town they all live in and gossip spreads fast. Someone did what they did for a reason and isn't too happy to have an old man meddling in what the police have written off as a simple traffic accident hit and run and it seems the girls may well need to find a new guardian if Luke isn't 100% alert! This was a great novel, except Hammond obviously being an old man himself has forgotten what a sixteen year old is like or isn't aware of what they are like and know and do in the current generation at all. He has Luke having to talk to a sixteen year old about an older boy who has asked her to go fishing who isn't aware there is much more beyond wanting to hold her hand. She also later has no idea why her mum would have expensive mum since no one would ever see it. Maybe Hammond should have made the oldest daughter 8 or 10 at the most, even this would be a stretch these days. This is my only fault with this story and where an editor should have probably stepped in. Great story though other than this factor and highly recommended!
