The person who wrote the first review of this book might have had a bad professor; the book is not to blame for his/her lack of comprehension. It is a well written, meticulously researched, and concise text. If one has not had much experience with philosophy, historiography can seem obtuse. Beverley Southgate does a fine job of distilling scores of crucial developments in the reading and writing of human history into a slim volume. I would not advise a novice to pick up _History: What and Why?_ without access to a seasoned scholar for consultation. Just because a publisher calls a book an "introductory survey" (on the back of the paperback ed. I have) does not mean it is a simple book without substance. As are many things, history is often best learned in good company.
