It is thought that the first modern people settled in what is now known as South Africa more than 100,000 years ago. The Stone Age and the Iron Age are the two eras that make up South Africa's prehistoric history. These phases are named after the broad technological patterns they represent. Following the finding of human fossils at Taung and australopithecine fossils in limestone caves at Sterkfontein, Swartkrans, and Kromdraai, these places were given the status of being a World Heritage Site.
