History of Mount Sharon Cumberland Presbyterian Church

This is a history of Mount Sharon Cumberland Presbyterian Church in Greenbrier, Tennessee. Uncovering the full history of Mount Sharon is not without its difficulties. Two fires destroyed the main sources of historical records, one at the home of John Bowie in 1942, who had been keeping church records at his house, and a second at the church manse in 1956. This account, therefore, is based on church records, family memories, the accounts of A.L. Dorsey, John Huffman, and Paul and Margaret Walker, the 1886 Goodspeed's History of Tennessee chapter on "The History of Robertson County," and The History of the Cumberland Presbyterian Church, published in 1899.
Founded in 1810 near present day Dickson County, Tennessee, The Cumberland Presbyterian Church has seen tremendous growth since its inception. Numerous congregations have spawned, family ties have been established, and the Holy Spirit continues to engender a zeal within each person who calls themselves a Cumberland. This zeal was a crucial aspect of the early Sharon Community. Samuel Crockett, the proprietor of the land which Mount Sharon Cumberland Presbyterian Church sits today, donated for the purpose of founding the congregation. Little did he know or perhaps he did, two hundred years we would be putting together a celebration which looks back on all this congregation has been able to do.
