It was inhabited by the Ta no, an Arawakan people, who variously called their island Ayiti, Bohio, or Kiskeya. Columbus promptly claimed the island for the Spanish Crown, naming it La Isla Espa ola ("the Spanish Island"), later Latinized to Hispaniola.
