This is how it begins: a word comes to mind, and I write it on the page, at the top of the page, more precisely, at the top left, since it is the first word to come along so it could be called the beginning or at least the beginning of this page. But to call this act the beginning, to assert that the act of writing the word is the beginning of this page presupposes there is a page from which this page proceeds so the word I have just now written might be a continuation of a thought, an idea, a sentence, or a paragraph that might have preceded it. The word might represent the present moment but the past from which it arose is unknown-indeed, unknowable, in this moment-and the course of any word that follows the first must inevitably move forward into a future not yet written. At this point, it is hard to say what the word means or where it will go. It is a placeholder, a small black spot looking out on what must appear very much to be some vast white space, an ocean of white around which the word waits to be given a meaning. In the course of time, we will see what happens.
