In 2012, Preservation North Dakota hosted the Prairie Festival, a celebration of place in German-Russian Country, comprising the three North Dakota counties of Logan, Emmons, and McIntosh. Attendees from around the state toured and learned about the region where German immigrants from Russia are the predominant population. History & Memory in German-Russian Country is a collection of essays and photos representing the events of the Prairie Festival. Table of Contents: "Preface," by Thomas D. Drawing on a cultural resource survey conducted for the State Historical Society of North Dakota, Martens writes about the impact of the New Deal construction projects on the historic landscape and regional culture with specific attention to buildings and people in German-Russian Country. "Refusing Nostalgia: Memory and Place in German-Russian Country," by Debra Marquart. A personal narrative on historical identity drawing on the author's childhood experiences in Logan County and historic ancestry research. "The German-Russian Voice," by Carol Just. A response to the previous chapters and considering the emergence of a German-Russian identity and voice and its grounding in landscape and place.
