He became a commander in the fight against Batista and very early opposed the totalitarian regime implanted by the Castros. Furthermore, as son-in-law to historian Ramiro Guerra, Duarte had access to many of his archives and dedicated the last years of his life to writing this history, one of the most documented to date.
