In 1872, the Missouri-Kansas-Texas (MKT) Railroad crossed the Red River into Texas and the frontier town of Denison was born. Thousands of industrious souls flocked to see "The Infant Wonder" that had been selected as the terminus of the railroad. The newborn city seemed to grow overnight, and was quickly adorned with grand buildings, a free graded public school, and a bevy of religious institutions. A noted dueler and news writer, M.M. Scholl, chronicled many of Denison's early events in his newspaper, the Denison Dispatch. In 1929 Scholl published a series of monthly articles known as Historic Denison from which he retold many of the early stories of Denison, Grayson County and Texas. This book brings together Scholl's colorful recollections of frontier characters male and female, local gambling and sporting exploits, the growth of his frontier community, and camping and hunting trips in the wilderness of Indian Territory. All proceeds from this work will be used to fund public art and other improvements in beautiful Denison, Texas.
