The work is a review and reflection on structures that are of historic and architectural significance in Phillipsburg, Alpha, and Greenwich, Lopatcong and Pohatcong Townships. The focus is on domestic buildings, but the Morris Canal, railroads, bridges and industrial structures are included, including the religious architecture of the townships. The architectural history of the area reflects the transformation from a barely settled frontier and agricultural service center to a vigorous industrial and transportation hub. The region has some of the best preserved late 18th century stone Georgian manors and German barns in the state, as well as an exceptional array of mid-to-late 19th century dwellings and commercial buildings.
