At turns funny and sumptuously styled, "His Creator's Frustrations with Gentleman Grimn" may very well be the only novel of the twenty-first century to be as intellectually monstrous and monstrously intellectual, as rigorous in pursuit of philosophical and psychological fissures, as "The Brothers Karamazov", and as difficult and delightful as "Ulysses". It consists of the purely metaphysical frustrations of its protagonist, a great black writer, Escombe, at not being able to finish his perfect book about his hero, Grimn. The results are unpredictable, not least for himself.
