By aggressively training to climb Mt. Fuji, the author was able to channel the experience so that it was not focused only on the physical challenge. By doing so, he was able to absorb the many facets that make up the mountain. These included the ever changing: animals, birds, flowers, and trees that make Mt. Fuji their home. The author takes the reader through the lush forest at the base, then he circumnavigates around the mountain and finally claws his way up a lunar landscape to the top of Mt. Fuji to witness a breathtaking sunrise. Throughout the book, the author describes the mountain's colors, sounds, winds, temperatures and the ever changing clouds that pass around it.
