Highland Avenue, set in the Virginia-Highland neighborhood of Atlanta, is the account of one day in the life of an 81-year-old man struggling to live independently in the face of the challenges brought on by advancing age. After waking up one morning feeling un-usually well, he decides to go for a long walk like he used to when he was healthier. During his walk the sights of Highland Avenue trigger waves of memories of the recent and distant past, both tragic and comic.His daughter has her own struggle, one that many of her contemporaries face: caring for a parent who is caught in the whirlpool of weakness caused by old age and does not want to admit he needs help. This novella, based on the life of the author's father, is infused with nostalgia for Atlanta when it was a younger city, but it also points beyond that particular place and time in its portrayal of the universal experience of aging and the joy of fond memories that come from a long life well lived.
