varied and universal messages from across the centuries

Tufte has gathered from across the centuries some lovely poems of weddings. Some are indeed positively ancient, like "Hymn to Marriage, for Manlius and Junia" by Catullus, circa 54 BCE. Or the poems by Sappho and Aristophanes. Closer to our time, Shakespeare is present in several of his poems, including the one that gives the book its title. While Donne and Milton are also represented. The messages are varied but universal.
