1st in a trilogy of high grand adventure!

I normally don't even read this genre, but this trilogy was awesome to read. Lots of action and adventure mixed with a great love story. Highly recommended!

Believable realism at its best

Although it has been a year since I read this, the power and quality of the writing has stuck with me. Neither overly violent nor passively nostalgic, this book struck me as a well balanced Western for modern times. It's fast paced, but Manning does an excellent job of capturing the mood of the times (1825) and the grandeur of the setting. He also makes you _care_ about the hero, while keeping you on the edge of your seat.
