Yes, this was a first novel, and yes, I managed to get it free through Book Gorilla, but I just couldn't rate it higher than three stars. I thought about it...but no...
Unfortunately, while perhaps this exact idea has not been done before, there are quite a few similar stories floating around out there. You can’t hold this fact against the writer too much because everyone gets their inspiration from somewhere, but if the writing isn’t absolutely stellar in a case like this it has a tendency to fall flat for me. So what was wrong with the writing? About halfway through was when I started skimming over certain pages rather than reading and digesting every word. I hate skimming, but I was so tired of reading pages and pages of the protagonist doing the same repetitive things (jumping fences, climbing walls, etc.), and reading his constant thought processes that never really went anywhere while he tried to figure out who was behind everything.
I also had a hard time relating to any of the characters, especially the ones set up in the traps Celo had designed for them. I understood that the protagonist cared about them and why, but that didn’t help me to care much at all. Whenever something bad happened to someone I never had that moment of “Noooooo!” I think Brown intended the back stories about their childhood to help with this, because he didn’t give us any chance to get to know each of them in the beginning, but the flashbacks just had a tendency to get in the way for me.
Something else I had an issue with was that all the tasks were too easy. The only reason our protagonist ever seemed to fail them was because he was dilly dallying, especially the first one. Every time he did anything he would stop to do something else. I can’t tell you how many times the really “quick paced” suspense scenes got to me because he would stop to have a conversation, or look around, or SOMETHING while he should have been running to save his next friend.
I decided to rate Hide And Seek a 3, because despite all its flaws it kept me reading and there were times I had a hard time putting it down. I also feel that Brown did a good job with the subtle foreshadowing. This is for anyone looking for a decent book that’s fast, easy reading, as I was able to finish it in just two sittings.
