Hey kid, what's that AI thing?: Understanding Artificial Intelligence for Kids

By August Phoenix Vellor

Your child has probably already talked to AI today - and they don't even know it.

From voice assistants to game opponents to that funny camera filter, AI is quietly woven into kids' everyday lives. Hey Kid, What's AI? gives children ages 6-10 the words and understanding to make sense of it - without the hype, the jargon, or the scary headlines.

Written in short, simple sentences perfect for independent reading or bedtime read-aloud, this 40-page illustrated book walks kids through seven friendly chapters:

What AI actually is (and isn't)How AI learns - using examples kids already understand, like riding a bikeWhere AI shows up in daily life, from phones to video gamesThe amazing ways AI helps doctors, scientists, and the planetWhy AI sometimes gets things wrong, and what that teaches us about fairnessWhy humans - not machines - are always in chargeHow today's kids might be the ones building tomorrow's AI

Each chapter ends with a hands-on activity - drawing, sorting games, quizzes, and a big final project where kids design their own AI invention. It's not just a book to read once; it's one to revisit, scribble in, and talk about together.

Charmingly illustrated throughout with warm, hand-drawn artwork, Hey Kid, What's AI? turns a complicated topic into a conversation your child will actually want to have - and gives you, as a parent, an easy way to start it.

Perfect for: curious kids, homeschool and classroom use, screen-time conversations, and parents who want to get ahead of the AI questions before their kids do.
