Swiss businessman and wine producer Donald M. Hess is also the founder of the Hess Art Collection, one of the world's most important private holdings of contemporary art, which are in large part open to the public in the museums of the Hess wineries at Napa, California, Glen Carlou in Paarl, South Africa and Bodega Colom in Calchaqu Valley, Argentina. (A fourth museum is being planned at the Peter Lehmann Winery, in Barossa Valley, Australia.) This volume evidences Hess's eye for quality with its judicious selection of over 40 years of important works by such established artists as Robert Motherwell, Francis Bacon, Anselm Kiefer and Franz Gretsch, as well as those who are perhaps less well known, including Magdalena Abkowitz and Leopoldo Maler.
