"Herstory: Women's Poetry" presents the world from a female-centered perspective. It captures various experiences and thoughts primarily from the viewpoint of the third person "she". The book endeavors to bring understanding of women's issues and how women construe the world. But it also serves as a motivational and empowering piece in many instances. The book in sum recognizes women's strength and affords them the dignity and consideration they deserve. "Herstory: Women's Poetry" may be regarded as document encouraging advocacy. It often uses the individual she to represent or encourage efforts to change certain outstanding abuses of women's rights, like sex trafficking, femicide, and domestic abuse. By encapsulating the struggle in individual terms, the book makes it personal and conveys to the reader who sees through her eyes the idea that he or she has a personal responsibility to assist. By vicariously experiencing through "she", the intent is to arouse empathy to where awareness becomes so overwhelming, one feels compelled to do something. At the very least, one's awareness should be heightened. If he or she is not motivated enough to be a part of greater efforts, the hope is that he or she should be sensitized enough to such efforts to be supportive. By reading this book, one should also develop a keen sense of himself or herself, and the world we live in. By questioning assumptions about women's place and roles, we inevitably question our contribution. We inevitably question ourselves. What are our expectations of women? Is our reasoning just? How do we adjust our behavior? These are but a few of the self-conscious questions that this book strives to stimulate in the reader. The book's effectiveness in assuming a female perspective is tempered by the fact that it's written by a male. But if it serves as impetus to have better works of poetry by women capturing their perspectives and issues, the author would consider it a successful venture.
