In March of the year 2000, in New York City, a media phenomenon happened. It involved a New York City Transit bus driver who was injured coming to the aid of a teen-aged mugging victim in New York's subway system. when it was reported this driver was refused pay by his employers for time spent recovering from his injuries due to the rescue, a media frenzy occurred. The Daily News, all the network TV news teams, People Magazine, the Mayor, the Mayor's office, the police commissioner, and City Hall combined for a four-day blitz.I was that bus driver. And this is my story - the story of not only what happened, but the mosaic of circumstances that brought a definite design to it, causing all of it to happen the way it did to get on important, needed message out there: "We're all here for each other. Let no one discourage you from caring and getting involved. If you care, you'll do what you can." It was echoed by Mayor Giuliani and carried out by the people of the City of New York incoming to the aid of this 'hero bus driver', exemplifying the fact that this was indeed 'A City of Heroes' - a statement that was to be proven a little more than a year later on 9/11.But in the year 2000, a city full of heroes came to the aid of one of their own. This is their story. This is my story. This is our story.
