Heroin Jesus

It was September 17, 2005. I hadn't been home or called home in weeks. My mother and father were preparing themselves for the worst--a call from someone telling them to come identify my body. Unbeknownst to me, my mother was sitting on her couch at home, and my grandmother walked by her on her way out, placing her hand on my mom's shoulder and said, "I know what it's like to lose a son". As my grandmother left, my mother waited until she heard the door shut and fell down on her face onto the carpet in her house, crying out to God to "take me" and to not let me die in the streets. Well, the very next day, I would be calling her and dad from a homeless shelter in downtown Memphis. Now, almost ten years later, I am a whole man thanks to the grace of God and my mother's prayer.
