This was the first History book I ever owned. It was a 6th birthday gift back in April of 1965, the year the book was published. Designed for the younger reader it introduced me to what would be a life long passion...History. Easy to read and very well illustrated it tells the tale of the Civil War from beginning to end combining the basic facts with the feel of a good novel, keeping the young reader interested and entertained at the same time. I had learned to read when I was five and never found it difficult or boring. Twenty five years later I received my BA in History and still have this worn and slightly battered book on my shelf. I would very enthusiastically recommend this book to any parent or adult who wants to introduce a young reader to an important period in our nations past.
