Heroes Forged of Iron

By Janson Davies

Mario Balcom came to Colony 13 to build a frame for mining equipment.

Then the dome split open.

An alien raiding force has landed on the lunar mining colony, cutting through reinforced alloy, slaughtering security, and harvesting the ore stockpile that brought humanity to this dead crater in the first place. Rescue is hours away-if anyone heard the distress call at all.

Mario is no soldier. Neither are the eleven ironworkers under his charge.

But they know steel. They know fire. They know load paths, weld seams, weak points, and how to build something that holds when everything else fails.

Armed with plasma torches, magma bolt shooters, rebar cutters, rigging cable, and a hundred and twenty tons of crawler excavator, Mario's crew transforms the colony's fabrication bay into a fortress unlike anything their attackers have ever faced.

Four hundred lives depend on a crew that came to build machines and ends up building a legend.

On the moon, under the hard light of Starlight Mountain, heroes are not born.

They are forged.
