Heritage Railways & Tramways of the British Isles

Combining romance with industrial power, railways have been the setting for numerous films and novels. But, with the passing of the age of steam, the romance diminished - until the emergence of the heritage railways. Now there are over 130 heritage railways in the British Isles, lovingly restored (usually by volunteers), all of them offering rides in vintage carriages, hauled by either steam or diesel locomotives. And rides are also offered by six heritage tramways - one of whose cars are still horse-drawn.

Heritage Railways & Tramways of the British Isles provides all the information needed to find a heritage railway or tramway near you. Not only are there maps and directions, but information is included on what other things are provided on site - many railways have museums, shops and cafes, and most have toilets and parking facilities (although not necessarily at every station). Additional facilities for disabled visitors are listed, and information is provided on travelling with your dog or a bicycle, baby buggy or wheelchair. Each entry also includes a short history of the railway, together with a note of the length of the journey.
