Annie (Toni Collette) is having a tough time; all her relatives either hate her, misunderstand her, or die in excruciating ways. Usually, all three. Where is this leading, and what possibly can this have to do with hereditary secrets? This is a run-of-the-mill psychological-horror presentation. It is ideal as a training film on how to make movies of this type. The plot and dialogue, even the old, “it is the last person you would suspect”, the thing is played to the hilt; it verges on a creature of a horror movie. For people who like the formula, it is a top-notch movie. There may even be a hot time in the old town tonight. But this movie is not and will not be a classic. For people who want something new or a better-masked plot, with red herrings, a butler, and with extra twisty turns, you will be disappointed. It does have a crowning end. And we get to hear Judy Collins singing “Both Sides Now” over the ending credits.
