In order to support researchers in the field of Applied Linguistics, literacy practices in rural schools were investigated. Based on important historical features of the construction of Brazilian peasant subjectivity and nuances of school identities in this context - eleven students participating in the research - literacy practices in Portuguese language classes were analysed. Identities were outlined through these practices during a school semester of observation and revealed different moments of identity negotiation: student/student, student/teaching material, student/teacher, in addition to the perceptions of the pedagogical coordination and school management.
