Hercules walks through the hot gates and finds himself in a realm in which a race is literally enslaved by fear. A king called "the wielder of dread" controls people's fears and reduces them to slaves. Knowing him to be utterly fearless, Rania, the sole member of the race to be unaffected by fear relies on his help to free her people. Hercules and Rania trudge along a whitewashed desert and ultimately come upon the enslaved multitudes, who labor endlessly under a merciless sun. A king observes Hercules' progress and aims to trigger the demigod's mortal dread. Hercules realizes that he must become the wielder of dread in order to liberate these people.
