Herat Province Survey: Documentation of Archaeological Sites and Monuments in Herat Province

This book presents the results obtained during archaeological surveys carried out by German-Afghan Archaeological Mission in Herat Province between 2004 and 2007. In 13 districts 355 sites and monuments dating from the 3rd millennium BCE to the recent past were documented. The ground survey data are supplemented by published information and satellite as well as aerial image evaluations. In an introductory part, the methodology, the natural environment and different types of sites and monuments are discussed. The site catalogue provides brief introductions to each district with several maps, images and site descriptions with photographs, drawings and the finds. The book concludes with an analysis of the geographic and chronological distribution of sites and monuments and evaluates the results in a wider cultural context, opening new perspectives on Herat's hinterland.
