Forced by the gods to be wed. Forced by their secrets to be enemies. A desperate queen and a lowly fisherman must join together to save her land in this spellbinding epic fantasy from Sarah K. L. Wilson."Intricately wrought and deeply imaginative ... the kind of delicious slow-burn fantasy that made me love reading." ―Hannah Whitten, author of The Foxglove King Queen Coralys, ruler of the Crocus Isles, kneels to no one. But when her kingdom is besieged by a terrible hurricane, killing her husband and destroying half her nation, she is forced to make a deal with the gods for salvation. But the gods have a wicked sense of justice, and they demand payment for their help. Coralys must give up her titles and marry the first man to set foot on her pier: a poor, wounded fisherman with broad shoulders and dark power in his eyes. Coralys keeps her promise and sets out with him in his dinghy, with only the hope of revenge against the gods to keep her from despair. But her new husband hides his own secrets: a link to the gods that may make him her enemy or her ally, and a mysterious list of impossible feats waiting to be crossed off. However, learning to trust each other will be their greatest challenge, because only together can they stop the enemies gathering at her kingdom's shores. "Perfect for readers who love slow-burn romance steeped in lush fantasy " ―Danielle L. Jensen, #1 New York Times bestselling author of A Fate Inked in Blood
I must admit, it took me awhile to get into this story but once it did, I was invested in the characters who turned out different than I thought at first and I needed to know all the twists and plans of the gods. So, it was also a bit frustrating to get that cliffhanger after the big reveal and how we leave Coralys and Oke. Though I really would love to read the next book and hope it comes out soon!
This was an intriguing world, with most of the focus on island kingdoms, including the one that Queen Coralys ruled peacefully up until the tragedy of a storm and the death of her husband, along with the condition of marrying a stranger to stop the storm and save her people. She was both smart but also didn't always think through her actions. Understandable due to the grief and worry for her people. Oke was interesting and mysterious and I think a lot of tragedy that happens could have been avoided if he and Coralys actually sat down and communicated. It does get better by the end and I am sure they are going to be a force to be reckoned with in the next book.
I enjoyed the world building that took place in this book, introducing the gods, a few kingdoms and all the twists and plots for power and revenge. As I said before, I was definitely invested after getting through the slow (and kind of confusing) start as I got used to all the new traditions and how the way this world works.
I think this is a good first book and I am looking forward to seeing what Coralys and Oke will get up to now that they are in sync with each other! Hail to the Drowned Queen and the Fisher King!
