Henryk: The Boy Who Made the Violin Sing

By Elizabeth A. Faidley

What happens when extraordinary talent meets extraordinary dedication?

Henryk: The Boy Who Made the Violin Sing introduces young readers to the remarkable childhood and musical journey of Polish violinist and composer Henryk Wieniawski. Born in Lublin in 1835, Henryk grew up surrounded by music and quickly showed an unusual connection to the violin. His ability was so remarkable that, at only eight years old, he left Poland to study at the prestigious Paris Conservatoire, despite being younger than its usual students and not being French.

But talent was only the beginning.

Under the demanding guidance of violin teacher Lambert Massart, Henryk practiced scales, bowing, shifts, double stops, intonation, and more, again and again. By eleven, he had completed his violin studies and won the Conservatoire's highest violin prize.

Henryk's story then carried him far beyond Paris. He performed with his younger brother J zef, traveled from city to city, and eventually brought his violin across Europe and North America.

Filled with colorful illustrations, musical listening suggestions, maps, historical details, and an engaging child-friendly narrative, this book shows readers that difficult things can also be beautiful, and that natural ability becomes extraordinary when it is joined by discipline, curiosity, and hard work.

Part of the Little Composer Books series, Henryk makes classical music approachable by introducing children not simply to a famous name, but to the boy behind the music.

Perfect for young musicians, violin students, music teachers, homeschool families, classrooms, and children curious about the lives of great composers.
