The aim of all my books is to search out and bring to print the lives of the most fascinating men who have walked the earth, adding a step in our rise from the jungle. Besides their being unique, they all had another characteristic in common, they were men who preferred other men. How others lived, how they confronted life, is my own life's work, and the men I've chosen so far have been colossal in their impact: Alcibiades, Lorenzo de' Medici, Emperor Hadrian, Byron, the humanists of the Renaissance, Michelangelo, the explorers Stanley, Burton and Speke, heroes like Denis Browne and Lawrence of Arabia, and dozens of others. My books differ from classic biographies in that I relate only the salient parts of men's lives, which frees me to take detours into the events and the people surrounding my subject. In Henry III's case this includes the Wars of Religion that led to the Bartholomew Massacres, and the destinies of Mary Queen of Scots, the wife of one of Henry's brothers; as well as Queen Elizabeth and Catherine de' Medici, Henry III's mother; the murders of Darnley and Rizzio; the importance of Renaissance Malta in saving the West from barbarism; and the life of Ivan the Terrible, concomitant with that of Henry III.
