Dr Harding and I knew each other, as we both lived in Geneseo, N.Y. and I graduated from Geneseo Central with his son Larry, class of '69. Walt founded THE THOREAU SOCIETY in 1941 and until his demise in 1996, Walter R Harding was a premier world Thoreau scholar. Never once did Walt have a superiority complex, he was always a gentleman and friend with a great sense of humor. I was my privilege to work an Independent study with Dr Harding in 1973. It remains a tresured one-on-one class with Walt. Walt decades of devoted work in understanding Thoreau's life and literary criticism will last for centuries. His students and friends will treasure him as if he were a family member. Walt's teaching career at S.U.N.Y. Geneseo is a legend. He demanded excellence and received it. His friendliness, his inquisitive nature, his demanding writing and teaching careers, were as one,and he shall be missed by all who knew him. Many say, as I do, "Walt deserved the 1965 Pulitzer Prize" for biography. Yet Walt received many honors, the greatest being the simlicity of self-respect, respect from colleagues, his students and friends, his love of family and nature, a simlicity Thoreau would have appreciated. New York State honored him with "Excellence in Collegiate Teaching," an honor he richly deserved. No one in the world knew more of Thoreau than Walt. Now he and Henry are united in spirit, enjoying canoeing upon divine Walden waters. Yet please read Walt's many biographies and literary insights/prefaces of Thoreau works. His book, THE DAYS OF HENRY THOREAU is a biographic masterpiece. All current biographies are measured by Walt's writing and scholarship.
