Hemlock & Silver

By T. Kingfisher

Book Overview

DELUXE EDITION--a gorgeous hardcover edition featuring bright green sprayed edges, a foil stamp on the casing, and custom endpapers illustrated by the author.

From New York Times bestselling and Hugo Award-winning author T. Kingfisher comes Hemlock & Silver, a dark reimagining of "Snow White" steeped in poison, intrigue, and treason of the most magical kind

Healer Anja regularly drinks poison.

Not to die, but to save--seeking cures for those everyone else has given up on.

But a summons from the King interrupts her quiet, herb-obsessed life. His daughter, Snow, is dying, and he hopes Anja's unorthodox methods can save her.

Aided by a taciturn guard, a narcissistic cat, and a passion for the scientific method, Anja rushes to treat Snow, but nothing seems to work. That is, until she finds a secret world, hidden inside a magic mirror. This dark realm may hold the key to what is making Snow sick.

Or it might be the thing that kills them all.

Very fun

This was a really fun, breezy read that had a lot of exploration into some of the magical elements of the snow white fairy tale. I'm not a fan of fairy tale re-tellings so much, but the synopsis of this one grabbed me- a woman obsessed with curing poisons? I was enchanted! My gripe with this book was that it felt like all the fun poison stuff and botany was isolated in the first half of the book, and I wish it was a bit more relavent throughout. Like, there's an entire thing in the beginning that gets her obsessed in the first place and it NEVER ties into the other half of the book despite plenty of ways to do so. I would normally knock a star off for something like that because it grinds my gears enough, but I still had so much fun and loved the MC that i still call it a 5 star read.

T. Kingfisher Rocks!

Gosh, I'm in love with this writer lately! Her stories are very well thought out & well written. The characters are so real - you get really invested in them. I love how the female leads are not Disney princesses, but real, flawed women. She has a kind of Sheri S. Tepper feel - strong women, clever, interesting stories. Highly recommend!

Favorite book of the year. Just so fun each chapter!

A great weekend adventure

Absolutely Fantastic!

Honestly, if I see that T. Kingfisher has a book coming out, I would do my best to get a copy as quick as possible in anyway I can. Both reading her novels or listening to them, like I was lucky enough to get the chance to do with Hemlock & Silver is a mind grabbing experience with all the details making it feel real, and the nice touch that she puts on well loved fairy tales to make an entirely new story, while still having a few of the comforting touches of the original. And I would consider this book to be another winner that I will happily read or listen to again and again. It is based off of Snow White but from the viewpoint of the healer Anja, summoned by the king to save his only remaining daughter, the princess Snow. The are no dwarves though you get a lovely adder, a rooster, and a mysterious grey cat (though to be fair, cats are always mysterious), all with parts to play in this horror touch tale. And I must say I love Anja, who speaks her own mind, is very capable in her chosen profession and uses that scientific mind to work on finding how and who Snow is being poisoned by. The setting is quite interesting and different too, no forests, just a very big desert. The very different part and also where the horror comes in has to do with magic mirrors. And when those come to play, it all really ramps up and I was on the edge of my seat, rooting for Anja and the very handsome bodyguard, Javier, to get to the bottom of it, before they and Snow are silenced permanently! The Narrator, Jennifer Pickens does a wonderful job in bringing Anja (prickly but selfless and always trying to use her knowledge of poisons to heal anyone in need) and the world she lives in to life! If I ever get poisoned, I would want her by my side. :) Many thanks to NetGalley and the publisher for giving me the chance to devour this audiobook! It is so good and I think everyone will enjoy it too!
