Hemingway: Essays of Reassessment

These essays, written specially for this collection, shed new light on Hemingway's conception of his life and work as a writer. Drawing on previously unpublished material, the selection includes a Prologue and Epilogue by Hemingway: the Prologue, a literary credo written as a penance for having talked about writing and losing the power to write; and the Epilogue, a meditation on trout fishing al vuelo, on the fly, using a long cane pole when he was a boy. The essays, several by well-known Hemingway scholars and critics--Scott Donaldson, Mark Spilka, Michael Reynolds, Earl Rovit, Jackson Benson--fall into three sections: Fiction and the Manuscripts, Fiction and Biography, and Fiction and Psychology. Reassessing accepted critical assumptions about Hemingway's life and work in light of, and by drawing on, the working manuscripts, this collection will interest scholars and students of the great "Papa" of American literature.
