This nicely crafted entry in Richard Sand's "Lucas Rook" series takes an effective approach not often seen in today's thrillers: instead of using a showy "hook" or an eccentric villain to draw the interest of the reader, author Sand simply places his P.I. character along the path of a routine insurance investigation (and a pretty ordinary one, at that) and has him do what an investigator does: investigate. Then, during the course of said investigation, things slowly get more interesting and slowly get more dangerous, until- before we know it- the embers become a conflagration and we really want to know what's going on and how it's going to turn out. This slow-burn approach works like gangbusters: the routine stuff- the insurance investigation, coupled with Mr. Sand's usual attention to the mundane aspects of Lucas Rook's personal life- creates an air of realism and believability that really sells the danger and the drama once those elements hit. There's also a memorable ending that both satisfyingly closes this Lucas Rook adventure and makes you mark your calendars for the next entry, "Blood Redeemed". Because, in the end, Mr. Sand accomplishes what every thriller writer ultimately sets out to do: making the reader need an immediate answer to the question, "what happens next?"
