Frank Haydn Hornsey, from Wellingborough, Northamptonshire, describes his army service with the 11th Battalion Suffolk Regiment during 1918. His book, "Hell on Earth", first published in 1930 by Chapman and Hall, is reprinted with a new introduction by his grandson, R.S.Richardson."Hell on Earth" is a vivid and realistic record of a typical "Tommy," who made the best of things, though there were times when he wished to God that he was dead. As an 18 year old, he was conscripted in November 1917, and went over to France in the following April, just after the big German offensive. He joined his battalion, at Erquinghem, where the line was quickly broken, and the British retreated across the River Lys. As the actuality of the record is its outstanding feature, no attempt has been made to tamper with the author's story, or to improve his style or spelling! The story is printed just as it was written, with all its crude revelations of the suffering of a half-starved army retreating through a network of traps and surprises, and yet keeping up its courage, its sense of humour, and its indomitable will to live.
